Reading music can be one of the most stressful parts of being in an ensemble. There's no feeling quite like showing up on that first day, ready to go, and the director passes out the music. You open it up, and it's like staring at a foreign language.
This fear might keep you from joining an ensemble in the first place. If you are one of the few brave enough to join without knowing how to read, the first few rehearsals are probably pretty darn hard for you. Everyone else is singing along, and you aren't even sure what page you're on.
How do I know this? Because I have worked with people JUST LIKE YOU who felt insecure, had low self esteem, and either quit the group or never joined in the first place because the discomfort was so high.
I have been in the musical world for almost 30 years--I know music of all types inside and out. But I also celebrate the variety of people's life experience and know that while some of us were learning music, others like you were out there doing awesome things in the world! You've raised families, learned languages, you've built and changed careers, you've traveled, you've made art or studied martial arts, and many other wonderful things.
And now it's time to change your story around reading music.
There is NO shame in not knowing how to read music--I understand and celebrate the life experience each client brings to our sessions!
That said, the #1 way to make a difference in your ensemble is to be proficient at reading music.
Working with me takes the pain out of learning to read so you can:
- Be confident and powerful walking into new musical groups
- Master music outside rehearsal on your own
- Know what you need and what the director/conductor is asking for
- Be able to join groups and make new friends who are just like you
- Be able to act on your desire and motivation to improve your section and make the ensemble that much better
- Help others learn their music more quickly and spread the joy of music to those around you
I also understand that simply knowing the "what" is...well, BORING! Every other reading method I've found out there overloads you with data to memorize by rote. Blocks of text move quickly through complex concepts, and they'll give you one or two worksheets per concept--assuming that by filling in a few boxes you've already mastered the material!
We are curious and smart, and we want to know WHY things are as they are. I don't simply tell you what a treble clef is and expect you to memorize a bunch of terms. I walk you through this historical and cultural integrations that created the system in the first place. Having context will not only help you understand the system, you'll REMEMBER it because it actually, finally MAKES SENSE.
By the end of our time together you will:
- Feel comfortable with all musical markings
- Understand the HISTORY behind these markings so they MAKE SENSE
- Be able to find and name notes
- Understand time signatures, key signatures, and other musical concepts
- Recognize intervals and chords
- ...and much, much more!
Don't just take it from me, see what one of my clients has to say about it!

Zeitgeist means the "spirit of the times," and is a feeling that pervades a culture.
Everything contributes to it, and everything is affected by it: our thoughts, music, philosophies, science, pop culture, politics, food, fashion, and more. It is the essence of what makes us alive, of what moves us through time.
I have found time and time again that if you can tap into the Zeitgeist of an era or a piece of music, everything that era produces falls into place and makes sense. Our appreciation of any of these eras is possible through connection with the Zeitgeist of that time.
This program, like all Zeitgeist Academy programs, will tap into that energy whenever possible, and do its best to incorporate the reasons behind the technologies, theories, and sounds for a fully comprehensive, much more accessible experience.
