Let me give you a sneak peek for what’s ahead of us!
For those who don't know, Zeitgeist means spirit of the times; it’s a German word that is literally the combination of the words “zeit,” or “time,” and “geist,” or ghost or spirit. Zeitgeist is the collection of cultural forces, from art to gossip to politics and fashion, and of course music, that all contribute to what it feels like to be alive and part of a culture.
At Zeitgeist Radio we’re going to talk about all the ways people interact with culture through music on this podcast. We’re going to speak with music performers, dancers, composers, and everyday people who make and consume music…all to illustrate the ways music creates the building blocks of our lives and influences our behaviors, social networks, and life paths.
Music is all about culture. Sometimes it’s obvious, sometimes it’s more hidden. But looking at history through the lens of music can build connections with people who lived long ago and give an insight into their thoughts, feelings, and dramas. Understanding the patterns and building blocks of music and how they change across time can connect us to what it felt like to be alive… not just now, but even hundreds of years ago.
There’s a moment I like to call a “Zeitgeist moment.” You know when you’re listening to some kind of music, doesn’t matter what kind, and suddenly you just feel it in your whole body? You come alive in a whole new way, consumed by the music. I believe this is an experience we all have in common, not only now but since humans have been making music. If we can tap into that Zeitgeist moment in music outside our normal listening, I believe we can forge a deeper understanding of people who are different from us.
Music isn't made in a vacuum.
It is created with purpose, and understanding its original zeitgeist will connect you with that purpose.
The goal of this project is to learn about artists from all kinds of backgrounds and ethnicities, or moments from history all over the world; to break down stereotypes and build compassion for each other.
My goal is to celebrate cultural differences—while bonding us together through a universal love of music.
I founded the Zeitgeist Academy to educate and support people at all stages of their musical journeys to understand that all music is relevant, and everyone can make it. I want music to come alive for every age and level of musical ability. I believe hearing stories of all the various ways people make or connect with music, can inspire people to pursue their own musical journey!
